Crispin Vitoria

Managing Director, Kukri Events

Crispin

Crispin has been running expeditions, adventure races and fundraising events for over 14 years which includes 10 years running the Kinabalu Challenge – a jungle adventure race set in Borneo. Previous to his role at Kukri Events, Crispin worked for youth development charity Raleigh International which included completing two expeditions in Namibia.

Crispin is passionate about helping to develop young people and has seen first-hand what a difference a bit of adventure can make to someone’s life if structured and delivered properly.

 

 

 

 

 

 

David Powell

Company Director

David

David has lived and worked in South East Asia for more than 18 years. He has extensive experience of adventure activities and experiential education around the world. Before his current role he was the Deputy Director of Outward Bound, Sabah for 3 years, managing and instructing a wide variety of development programmes. He has led expeditions and projects to all parts of Borneo and other areas in the region working with organisations such as Raleigh International, Trekforce Expeditions, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and World Challenge Expeditions.

David’s calm and meticulous approach to planning and safety sets a high benchmark ensuring all our programmes are delivered to the highest standards. David also travels internationally, delivering training and team building events including team development, leadership, conflict management, coaching skills and creative problem solving which complement the expeditions he runs perfectly. His wealth of experience in leadership and team development brings out the best of young people taking part in our educational expeditions and within the staff team he leads.

 

 

 

Beverly Chia

Expedition Leader

Beverly is a highly skilled trainer with extensive experience in tourism, hospitality and people development. After achieving a Diploma in Business and Hospitality Studies and beginning a career in Tourism, Beverly decided to focus on her passion and energy into people development. Beverly has been Business Development Manager and expedition leader since 2006 where she regularly devises unique and engaging, educational programmes for schools and youth groups.

Beverly has developed a customer-oriented approach and always maintains the highest standards for her clients. She has an encyclopedic knowledge of tourism in Sabah and her experiences working with groups across the region make her the perfect leader for your trip. With an engaging, interactive leadership style, she specializes in developing the skills and talents of individuals and teams. Beverly facilitates fluently in English, Malay and Mandarin.

 

 

 

 

Richard Michael

Operations Director / Expedition Leader

Richard is a highly experienced group trainer who specializes in using experiential activities to create powerful personal and team development experiences. Richard has planned the logistics of complex challenges and expeditions for 9 years with faultless attention to detail. Richard has been instrumental in the Kukri Kinabalu Challenge and the coordination of World Challenge teams in Borneo for 7 years. He has worked with companies such as Trekforce, Greenforce, Raleigh International and Antipodeans as well as several international school groups during their adventure activities in Sabah.

Born in Sabah, Malaysia, Richard also brings with him 7 years of experience in the tourism and hospitality industry of Sabah and holds a Degree in Business Administration from Ottawa University, USA. Richard speaks fluent English, Malay and Kadazan, a local tribal language.

 

 

Floyd Maurice

Operations Manager / Lead Guide

Floyd

Floyd is an expert outdoor activity instructor who has provided powerful and memorable experiential experiences to many thousands of programme participants. Floyd passes down his knowledge and jungle survival skills with a calm and steadfast approach, which rubs off on the people he leads. He consistently operates at the highest levels of professionalism and safety management at all times.

Born in Sabah, Malaysia, Floyd previously worked in Singapore and has since gained extensive international travel and work experience. He has a practical hands on and solution focused attitude to whatever challenges he is presented with. Floyd is also an experienced programme coordinator and team facilitator who thrives on encouraging and developing creative problem solving techniques and team work amongst his clients. Floyd speaks fluent English, Malay and Dusun.

 

 

Sylvia Sangau

Programme Coordinator / Lead Expedition Guide

Silvia

Sylvia has extensive experience leading youth groups. Her hands on, practical and hardworking style earns her great respect from her clients and fellow staff. Sylvia prepares and facilitates training programmes for local, regional and multinational schools throughout the Asian region. She also utilizes her amazing level of creativity and design skills to create equipment and props used for many of our experiential activities.

Sylvia is an expert jungle guide and adventure instructor who thrives of the great outdoors and claims to be happiest in a jungle hammock. Over 600 people a year benefit from the jungle training Sylvia passes on. She has a consistent approach to leading groups and has a calm influence over the teams she leads. Sylvia speaks fluent English and Malay.

 

 

 

 

Alex Zawadzki

Expedition Manager

Alex Zawadzki

Alex spent 3 years travelling to Borneo to work on expeditions with Raleigh International managing logistics and leading community and environmental projects.

Alex’s expedition experience began in the Arctic Circle when racing to the North Pole and since then she has been passionate about getting young people outdoors and challenging themselves through new experiences. She designs excursions for schools, seeking out sustainable projects and adventure activities to develop our programs. She supervises the safety and training of expeditions.

 

 

 

Zulkalani Sha (AKA Zul)

Programme Coordinator / Expedition leader

Zul

Zul is a full time guide and programme coordinator. His high energy leadership style makes him extremely popular with all the groups he works with. He builds excellent relationships with the teams and encourages them to achieve their goals and targets with a strong focus on creativity and teamwork.

Zul manages extensive educational expeditions programmes, coordinating and facilitating expeditions for school groups from around the world. He works regularly with up to 50 World Challenge groups and around 400 Raleigh International participants each year. Zul speaks fluent English and Malay / Indonesian.

 

 

Bob Hartley

Expedition leader

An incredibly experienced expedition leader who spends part of each year leading student expeditions in Borneo, Bob is the lead guide and safety advisor on the Kukri Kinabalu Challenge. He also conducts jungle training and expedition leader training courses and assessments in the UK. He has jungle training experience with the British Army Special Forces. Bob has lived in Borneo for 6 years and set up the Metre of Rainforest reforestation scheme in Kudat during his time here. Bob speaks English and Malay.

 

 

 

 

Martin Paul

Expedition leader

An Australian who has lived and worked in Borneo for 15 years, where he was an adventure tour guide and coordinator for UK and Australian tour groups for a number of years. Martin has worked extensively in developing community based ecotourism activities and capacity building in the Lower Kinabatangan area in Borneo, working closely with the community to create alternative sources of income and promote environmental awareness. He has worked extensively on projects with WWF and the Sabah Forestry Department and also runs jungle training courses. Martin has a degree in Tourism Studies and speaks fluent Malay.
